Read Tyler Cowen's posts on the Penguin Blog. In Discover Your Inner Economist one of America's most respected economists presents a quirky, incisive romp through everyday life that reveals how you can turn economic reasoning to your advantage-often when you least expect it to be relevant. Like no other economist, Tyler Cowen shows how economic notions-such as incentives, signals, and markets-apply far more widely than merely to the decisions of social planners, governments, and big business. What does economic theory say about ordering from a menu? Or attracting the right mate? Or controlling people who talk too much in meetings? Or dealing with your dentist? With a wryly amusing voice, in chapters such as "How to Control the World, The Basics" and "How to Control the World, Knowing When to Stop" Cowen reveals the hidden economic patterns behind everyday situations so you can get more of what you really want. Readers will also gain less selfish insights into how to be a good partner, neighbor and even citizen of the world. For instance, what is the best way to give to charity? The chapter title "How to Save the World-More Christmas Presents Won't Help" makes a point that is every bit as personal as it is global. Incentives are at the core of an economic approach to the world, but they don't just come in cash. In fact, money can be a disincentive. Cowen shows why, for example, it doesn't work to pay your kids to do the dishes. Other kinds of incentives-like making sure family members know they will be admired if they respect you-can work. Another non- monetary incentive? Try having everyone stand up in your next meeting if you don't want anyone to drone on. Deeply felt incentives like pride in one's work or a passing smile from a loved one, can be the most powerful of all, even while they operate alongside more mundane rewards such as money and free food. Discover Your Inner Economist is an introduction to the science of economics that shows it to be built on notions

In some countries, especially on the European continent, there still exists a remarkable veal market. This type of meat production seems, irrespective of any economic forecasts, to remain unchallenged so long as consumers expect that restaurants should offer courses like "r6ti de veaux", "vitello a la casa" or "Kalbsschnitzel". Producers, at least since about the past 1-/2 decades, have been aware of the beneficial effect of anabolic agents in veal production. This is possible due to the lack of endogenous sexual hormones during the juvenile or prepuberal status of these animals. A discussion about the benefit / risk - evaluation in connection with the use of anabolic agents in general was promoted in recent years by the public. This concern occurred concomitantly with the detection of illegally treated veal calves and the occurrence of diethylstilbestrol (DES) residues in canned food containing veal. The aim of this paper is to summarize the present status of residue data in edible tissues and excreta in order to allow the evaluation of the risk (given in the paper of Hoffmann within this program) and to consider reasonable monitoring measures. We have to face the fact that without an efficient control system the illegal treatment of calves can not be excluded. Therefore, this paper will not only consider different compounds and formulations, but will also deal with practised routes of administration.

Tom Aikens is undoubtedly one of the UK's most talented chefs. His first restaurant, Tom Aikens, has received huge critical acclaim and was awarded a Michelin star a year after opening, sealing Tom's reputation as a culinary leading light. Tom also drummed up a further legion of fans with the opening of Tom's Kitchen - an informal all-day brasserie serving familiar and rustic dishes. It is this simple, homely style of cooking that Tom focuses on in his new cookbook. With over 200 easy recipes there's something for every occasion, from fast fixes, such as Peppered Steaks with Crushed Roast Garlic or Spiced Mullet Soup with Paprika and Chorizo; to twists on classic comfort food such as Ham and Mustard Macaroni, Toasted Sourdough with Aubergine, Basil and Sheep's Cheese and Lamb Rump with Rosemary Polenta and Parmesan. There's also a chapter for weekend cooking - pies, slow-roasts and hearty fare - and one on how to get creative with your leftovers. When North Korea and food are mentioned in the same sentence, most people will still think of the famine of the mid-1990s, when untold thousands of North Korean citizens starved and many of the survivors were reduced to eating grass or bark. While food security remains a problem in rural areas of North Korea, in urban areas the "donju", or new middle class, have been spending their good fortune in exclusive restaurants serving not just the traditional dishes of the North such as cold noodles and barbecue duck, but also importing previously unknown foreign specialties like pizza, hamburgers and cappuccino. In fact, North Korea has an almost religious reverence for its culinary heritage. Trainee chefs are regularly dispatched to far-flung country provinces to collect and preserve folk recipes, restaurants are considered as "museums of traditional cuisine", and one of the first websites launched by the North Korean government was www. cooks.org. kp, which showcases local ingredients, recipes and restaurants. While North Korean food is often considered to be less spicy than its Southern equivalent, it also reflects long-standing cultural and commercial links with Russia. Barbecue and hotpot are popular, as in the South, but so is potato salad - a Russian specialty. North Korean dishes are also influenced - just like everything else - by the laws of the regime. While beef is hugely popular in South Korea, in North Korea it is technically illegal, as eating draught animals is banned. Many North Koreans also have an extremely sweet tooth, paying premium prices for imported Chinese candy and South Korean Choco Pies. This book brings together a selection of North Korean recipes. We hope you enjoy both the book and the recipes; jal meokkesseumnida!

ABOUT THE BOOK To me, living in San Francisco, California means eating at new restaurants, trying microbrews at dive bars, discovering new parks, seeing up-and-coming bands, and paying an extremely high monthly rent. Aside from the final part, I love that about San Francisco. But it wasn't until the introduction of Groupon to my life that I was able to enjoy these things. and at half the cost, no less. Since it began to appear in my daily email inbox, Groupon has brought nothing but good: more beers with friends, more local comedians, more great food, and more getting out of the house because I can afford to do so. Watching "60 Minutes: The Real Deal With Groupon" confirmed my love for the company and its revolutionary idea, but made me question whether Groupon is doing any good for the businesses it represents. This "60 Minutes" segment doesn't just show the fun side of Groupon founder and CEO Andrew Mason; it also questions whether all that fun is going anywhere Regardless, the "60 Minutes" segment is worth the watch. If nothing else, it will show you where your money is going the next time you hit that bright green "Buy!" button. MEET THE AUTHOR Macie Melendez has been a professional writer since 2005 and has been published in various publications, including Home Energy and San Francisco magazine, among others. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English from San Diego State University, and currently lives in San Francisco with her husband and their dog.

'Beauty and the Beast' is a magical tale of love, understanding, and triumph. Late one night a merchant becomes lost in the woods and stumbles upon a seemingly deserted castle. Hungry and tired, he enters the castle and finds a feast laid out on a grand table. Finding no one else in the castle, he eats the food himself. In the morning as he leaves he finds a beautiful rose bush in the garden and picks a single flower for his daughter Belle. Suddenly a beast appears and tells him he must die for abusing his hospitality. The merchant explains that he only picked the rose for his daughter. The Beast makes a deal with him that he can take the rose and other riches back to his daughter but only if he agrees to return and does not tell his daughter of the deal. The merchant agrees and makes his way home. He is unable to keep this terrible secret from Belle and when she finds out she returns to the Castle in his place. This is a wonderfully enchanting story, from the opening Once Upon a Time until the final Happily Ever After. A story your children will cherish for years.
