In the last five years, the number of people suffering with eating disorders has more than doubled. According to the American Diabetes Association, diabetic women are nearly three times more likely to develop an eating disorder than non-diabetic women. Diabulimia, one of many eating disorders, is the dangerous and often fatal practice of altering or omitting insulin to lose weight. The uncanny link between diabetes and eating disorders is irrefutable. Diabulimia is an eating disorder in which people with Type 1 diabetes deliberately give themselves less insulin than they need, for the purpose of weight loss. Often, people with Type 1 diabetes who omit insulin injections will have already been diagnosed with an eating disorder such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and/or compulsive eating. Diabulimia can be triggered or exacerbated by the need for diabetics to exercise constant vigilance in regard to food, weight and glycemic control. The frustration of managing blood sugars and their subsequent effects on weight and self perception (altered by dealing with a chronic illness) can also be damaging to self-esteem and body image. Here's the inherent irony: While diabetes treatment necessitates heightened awareness of food, rehabilitating an eating disorder almost always involves the opposite, deliberately minimizing focus on food. It is a catch-22. Intensifying the toxicity of this relationship even further, eating disorders exacerbate the complications of diabetes (blindness, kidney disease, heart disease, neuropathy and amputations), and diabetes exacerbates the complications of eating disorders (isolation, emotional eating, obsession with food and body weight). It is a life threatening partnership. Eating to Lose is one woman's memoir her journey from illness to recovery, and carves a pathway of hope and empowerment for the millions who continue to suffer with diabulimia. Eating to Lose is written for them, and perhaps even more importantly it is written for thei

Once situated in the palace, Sheshamun soon discovers harem lifestyle is not at all how she had once imagined. Though most of the concubines seem harmless to the young girl, she makes a fast enemy of Pharaoh Ramses' second wife, Senra. Between Senra spewing poison into her husband's ear and sending a spy after the young girl, Sheshamun learns she must find an ally. Mira willingly offers to be her confidant and help her overcome this relentless foe. The young girl also quickly learns Pharaoh has complete control of his concubines. Ramses' son, Prince Ramose, develops a strong romantic interest in Sheshamun; she in turn feels the same. The pharaoh discovers their budding desire for one another, and forbids his son from pursuing her. The new concubine is dealt another blow when one of her best friends from her village dies. She must choose between obeying Ramses' wishes for her to stay in the palace, or defying his orders and traveling back to her village for the funeral. Missing her friends and family terribly, Sheshamun picks the latter and runs away from the palace, not realizing how severe the repercussions shall be. The strong-willed teenager must choose between family and royalty; pride and duty; honor and her own life.A great deal of research went into the creation of this novel about Ancient Egypt. The author was committed to making sure all details were historically accurate, from the food to the flora and fauna, and the daily practices of the Ancient Egyptians. This historical fiction even contains a topic, though currently taboo in today's world, was culturally relevant and the key to the survival of the Pharaohs.

War in a Golf Cart is a collection of four novellas that I wrote in 2014. It is my sincere hope that you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoyed writing them. The first work, War in a Golf Cart, deals with the struggles combat veterans face when they try to come home from their wars. It's an old story, but I've tried to give it a new face by creating fathers and sons from both the Vietnam War era and the more recent Persian Gulf Afghan struggles. Conflict, that subtle little brother and mother to Violence, exists not only in large spaces containing millions of men. It also lives and breathes in the smaller boxes where individuals must learn to co-exist if we are to have a civil and livable society. To me, the finding of that co-existence, the acceptance of the social contracts that bind us all, is the main point of the piece. Breakfast with Senator Wise, the second work, is pure political satire. Our hero, S.W, lives for nothing else than to be our next POTUS. We follow behind him and in him for a two hour stretch as he makes his way over all the bodies, some and no, who stand in his path. Ambition, that most dangerous word in all of the human universe, is his only enduring trait. Like all comedies, Breakfast feeds off of and serves contempt and hostility, foods I believe our current leaders endlessly gorge on whenever confronted by their rivals or constituents. Waiting for a Job, the third piece, appeals to many young people. Jerry, 24, our boomeranged hero, survives slothful and scared and maybe a tiny bit schizo in the basement of his high achieving and socially well adapted parents. The master of negation, inner, outer and somewhere in between, he discovers Beckett while surfing YouTube. The rest, as they say, is His-notmuchofa-story. The first person to read the piece said he thought it was written by a young person, which I took as high praise since I admit to being on the AARP side of 55.The last work, The Struggle for Space, is for me the most difficult. Ugly

The environmental movement has often been accused of being overly negative-trying to stop "progress." The Nature of Design, on the other hand, is about starting things, specifically an ecological design revolution that changes how we provide food, shelter, energy, materials, and livelihood, and how we deal with waste. Ecological design is an emerging field that aims to recalibrate what humans do in the world according to how the world works as a biophysical system. Design in this sense is a large concept having to do as much with politics and ethics as with buildings and technology. The book begins by describing the scope of design, comparing it to the Enlightenment of the 18th century. Subsequent chapters describe barriers to a design revolution inherent in our misuse of language, the clockspeed of technological society, and shortsighted politics. Orr goes on to describe the critical role educational institutions might play in fostering design intelligence and what he calls "a higher order of heroism." Appropriately, the book ends on themes of charity, wilderness, and the rights of children. Astute yet broadly appealing, The Nature of Design combines theory, practicality, and a call to action.

The allure of Africa has drawn explorers and thrill seekers for hundreds of years, but what compels a young family to leave behind financial stability, family and friends, most of their belongings, and all that is familiar, for the unknown? Follow Elaine, mining engineer husband Roy, and children Leia (12) and Nicolas (10), as they begin the first of many international adventures together, daring to make the leap from wondering what might have been to remembering what was. Discover the Zambian city of Chingola of 1995 through Elaine's eyes; her first encounter with culture shock, local and international schools, daily food purchasing at outdoor markets, washing clothes in a bathtub, and dealing with the frustration of local African banks. They expect adventure, even challenge and danger but nothing prepares you for a rifle turned on your children in the back seat of your car, a command to enter a guard's hut at a highway checkpoint, a charge from an angry elephant and the sound of pounding on your door as thieves attempt to break into your house. They weather these events and cultural clashes together as a family while also experiencing great explorations, new and eye-opening relationships and journeys of discovery. Standing on the edge of the gorge in the mist of Victoria Falls, sleeping in a tent on the banks of the Luangwa river listening to hippos, and sitting and watching the wide open sky, they know their anticipation and courage have met surprise and difference. In the end, a desire for adventure, and an embrace of uncertainty and newness, grow into a lifelong desire to welcome growth of character and understanding.

The book deals primarily with the aspects like energy resources and its proper utilization, disposal of various forms of wastes and its effects and effects of major catastrophic events like nuclear disasters, global warming, etc. It also deals with the choice of suitable disposal sites for solid and hazardous waste, which is growing at an extremely rapid pace due to rapid industrialization, population growth (primarily in countries like India and China) and urbanization. In addition groundwater contamination due to various causes and its effect on the food chain is also amply discussed. The book is specifically aimed with the state-of-art information regarding research and development in these areas of study, coupled to extensive modelling and case based results obtained, both from India as well as other countries. The book is extremely instructive for the students, research workers, scientists, faculty members in Applied Physics, Solid Earth Geophysics, Radiometric Methods and Exploration, Ground Water Geochemistry, Mathematical Modeling Techniques in Earth Sciences, Near Surface Geophysics and Earth and Environmental Sciences.

Understanding why agricultural policies of developed countries are what they are is critical on several accounts for the developed countries as a group and for individual countries. It is important because the inter-dependencies among national agricultural policies are so numerous, as illustrated by the ongoing agricultural trade confrontation between the United States and the European Community; confrontation that is vividly expressed in the current subsidy war between the two trading blocs. The stakes for developing countries are also very high because the domestic agricultural policies of these two giants have a considerable influence on the international markets of major agricultural commodities. Studying why policies are what they are is an important research issue: legitimate in its own right on scientific grounds and relevant for any institution dealing with agricultural policies. Thus, it is only fitting that an international research institute dealing with food policy should analyze developed country policies and actions. This book is a further development of a research report by Michel Petit, ``Determinants of Agricultural Policies in the United States and the European Community", published by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), and is written by a team of eminent European scholars from a variety of organisations called together by Michel Petit and working under his leadership. Concentrating on the policy process in the European Community, this research provides useful insights on the influence of domestic, economic and political factors in shaping the positions of member countries in Community negotiations and on the process leading to a Community policy decision.

Artists who manage to get some exposure, at the very least, have to deal with the public. At the very worst, they end up in Hell. Hell may come in the form of smarmy agents, sycophantic students, bad film scripts or journalists with ulterior motives. There are lights at the end of the tunnel, albeit, peculiar ones: whether it is the solace that a struggling actor finds in impersonating the kind of cop he used to play on television or a philosophy based entirely on food which one ancient teacher adopts. Some manna from heaven proves to be full of worms, however, as it is with one man admitted to a 'hospital' which turns out to be a strange prison run by subterranean authorities. As bookstores around the world close and the human race stops reading, God sits in Heaven with a representative of man as they negotiate on what to do about it. Ultimately, the stories in this book form a whole which deals with what it means to be an artist in a blood-hungry world driven by its need for entertainment, pleasure and its neurotic tendency to destroy its own idols.

In the grey post-war world, Soho was the most exciting and dangerous place in Britain. Crime, sex, foreign food, and jazz, all lived side by side in this melting pot of approximately one square mile in the centre of London that is Soho. There were no flowers near to where Jack Comer was born; as a Jew from the east end of London, his earliest memory of a vibrant colour was the scarlet red blood that gushed from the gaping wound left by a cut-throat razor, during a street fight between two rival illegal bookmakers. With such childhood memories it was no wonder that Comer wandered into a life of crime. A life that took him from his humble east-end beginnings, to the top of his chosen profession, as the boss of the London Underworld. Wage snatches and gold bullion heists featured heavily in Comer's line of work, as did protection rackets, gambling, and taking over west-end nightclubs. None of this however, could be achieved without a high level of violence, some of which ended in death, gang warfare, bent coppers, and double dealings from all sides. There were however, two sides to Jack Comer; the side that everyone saw was Jack Comer the vicious gangster, but the other side of the coin was Jack Comer, the family man, who would have laid his life on the line for his wife and daughter. Jack Comer made many enemies along the way, from Darby Sabini and the early racecourse gangs during the 1930s, to the 1940s wartime racketeers, and through to the Messina Brothers, who ran the first organised sex trade gangs and who were threatening the well-being of his clubs and spielers in the west end. As the 1950s was coming to an end, the old guard were also in decline and new faces were starting to make their presence felt around Soho. Reggie and Ronnie Kray were about to become the new face of British crime and Comer was starting to feel the heat, but being the man he was, he was not about to take this new threat lightly.

This book provides an overview of climate change in India using river basin data and analytical and econometric methods. It, first, makes a quantitative assessment of how climate change affects agricultural and food production systems; second, predicts how these systems may respond to climate change; and third, suggests adaptation measures and strategies to improve the income of farmers, increase production, save water and conserve environment. The work will be greatly useful to policy-makers, researchers and teachers of agricultural economics, environmental studies and economics and development studies as also to research organizations dealing with climate modelling and resource management.

The book about homogeneous catalysis with metal complexes deals with the description of the reductive-oxidative, metal complexes in a liquid phase (in polar solvents, mainly in water, and less in nonpolar solvents). The exceptional importance of the redox processes in chemical systems, in the reactions occuring in living organisms, the environmental processes, atmosphere, water, soil, and in industrial technologies (especially in food-processing industries) is discussed. The detailed practical aspects of the established regularities are explained for solving the specific practical tasks in various fields of industrial chemistry, biochemistry, medicine, analytical chemistry and ecological chemistry. The main scope of the book is the survey and systematization of the latest advances in homogeneous catalysis with metal complexes. It gives an overview of the research results and practical experience accumulated by the author during the last decade.
