All three plays The Zoo Story, The Death of Bessie Smith and The American Dream are Edward Albee's early plays in which he points out the deplorable state of the American society. Albee's way of writing is provocative because his ultimate goal is to shock his audience. At the same time he wants to amuse the viewers with dialogues that are governed by sarcasm and irony. He writes in the preface of the play The American Dream: 'Is the play offensive? I certainly hope so; it was my intention to offend- as well as amuse and entertain.' (p.14) Thus his plays manages to confront the audience with the harsh reality of life and the problems of modern society. In The Zoo Story a clash of two different representatives of the modern American society takes place and ends up in an accidental manslaughter. In The Death of Bessie Smith the audience faces a society ruled by hatred, racism and frustration. The third play which is going to be examined closely in this paper is The American Dream, a sad portrait of an American family craving for something to replace the emptiness they find themselves in. This paper will examine the social criticism in these three plays which were written between 1958 and 1960 in order to find common topics and critical issues which were present at that particular time, and are still relevant today. The topics that are going to be analyzed are the outcasts of the society and their treatment by the members of the establishment, the lack of communication and growing violence as a result of it and finally the artificial values of the modern society and the constantly present hypocrisy and double standard. As Edward Albee sums it up: The play [The American Dream] is an examination of the American scene, an attack on the substitution of artificial for real values in our society, a condemnation of complacency, it is a stand against the fiction that everything in this slipping land of ours is peachy-keen. (p. 13-14)

There, I think I have everything in that I'll need at Oak Farm. "Everything! Good gracious, Ruth, how quickly you pack! Why, I've oceans and oceans of things yet to go into my trunk! Oh, there are my scout shoes. I've been looking everywhere for them. I'll need them if I do any hiking in those war scenes," and Alice DeVere dived under a pile of clothing, bringing to light a muddy, but comfortable, pair of walking shoes. "I don't know what I'd do without them," she murmured. "Alice!" cried Ruth, her sister, and the shocked tone of her voice made the younger girl look up quickly from the contemplation of the shoes. "Why, what have I done now?" came in rather injured accents. "I'm sure I didn't use any slang; and as for not having all my things packed as quickly as you, why, Ruth, my dear, you must remember that you are an exception-the one that proves the rule.

With Charactered Pieces, Caleb J. Ross presents a varied world of familial discord, one where a dead fetus evokes more compassion than its mother ("Charactered Pieces"); where two brothers offer the destruction of a family legacy as a birthday gift for their aging father ("My Family's Rule"); where one brother's love of Holocaust documentaries pushes his family through the aftermath of his assumed suicide ("The Camp").Charactered Pieces peels away the superficial armor of public life to reveal the flaws beneath and treats those perceived weaknesses not as hidden sources of pain but as reasons to celebrate life.

When their high-school-aged, punk, runaway daughter is found hosting a Jersey Shore hotel party, Rossi's parents feel they have no other choice: they ship her off to live with a Chasidic rabbi in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Within the confines of this restrictive culture, Rossi's big city dreams take root. Once she makes her way to Manhattan, Rossi's passion for cooking, which first began as a revolt against the microwave, becomes her life mission. The Raging Skillet is one woman's story of cooking her way through some of the most unlikely kitchens in New York City-at a "beach" in Tribeca, an East Village supper club, and a makeshift grill at ground zero in the days immediately following 9/11. Forever writing her own rules, Rossi ends up becoming the owner of one of the most sought-after catering companies in the city. This heartfelt, gritty, and hilarious memoir shows us how the creativity of the kitchen allows us to give a nod to where we come from, while simultaneously expressing everything that we are. Includes unpretentious recipes for real people everywhere. Rossi is the owner and executive chef of The Raging Skillet, described as a "rebel anti-caterer" by the New York Times. Rossi has written for many publications, including Bust, the Daily News, the New York Post, the Huffington Post, Time Out New York, and McSweeney's. She is the host of a long-running radio show in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

Author's Preface "The reason for writing this book was to share personal information, experiences and solutions from those who are now working through committed relationships, along with research and conversations with others who also have been in committed relationships. When making the decision to enter into a commitment with another person, it should never be taken lightly or made hastily. It is too serious of an undertaking to be based solely on emotions. Most of us would not marry another person without giving it serious consideration; why would you think of making a similar type of commitment without giving it the same amount of common sense reflection?" To me, the most important way to start the conversation about the dos and don'ts of a committed relationship is to say that you don't have to believe everything you read in this book, but you might learn something if you do. Take this advice as just relationship information. Everyone's relationship is different and what matters to one person may not be important to another. Still, there are some general dos and don'ts outlined in chapters of this book that may prove very valuable when considering whether or not to enter a committed relationship. There's always an exception to the rule. For example, things you shouldn't tell your partner: "My mother thinks you're getting fat." Or "Actually, I think Scarlett Johansson/Chris Hemsworth/Tyra Banks/Chris Evans/ Diego Boneta/Kate Upton/Denzel Washington/Sofia Vergara is way, way hotter than you." You should use common sense concerning things that harm the relationship. Both parties should discuss past relationships. It may create doubt in their relationship during the beginning, until they get to know each other, but I feel it is best to start with a clean slate. Tolerance, honesty, communication, sex, faith, commitment, family, temptation, politics, finances and friends all influence how long and strong a committed relationship will be. I know from personal exper

In my own prose I call it an ex-bum's desperate gambit. It is a collection of my newbie poetry, and whoever needs academic rules or finesse shouldn't purchase it. Still I did win some minor awards, and my insights and ways to reflect experiences or create fiction do outmatch other startup upstarts. My main themes revolve around: Streetwise, Insights and Life-Experiences, Relationships & Special Women, Fantasy Roleplaying or Urban Horror. I blend nonfiction with the fiction which made mehandle it, or to which real life inspired me. What is in it: Comments, training poems, my presented cinquain, my acrostic poetry, and some former contest poems.

So a guy or a gal walks into a bar and orders a. what? A Belgian lambic? A German Hefeweizen? An American barley wine? Today, with thousands of beers being made in the U.S. and many, many imported ales and lagers available at taverns and retailers, the once-simple decision to have a beer may feel a little like drowning. Drinkology Beer to the rescue. James Waller's new book is written especially for beer lovers who have no idea what "sparge" or "IBU" might mean. After covering the basics of brewing, Waller provides an informative, witty, and accessible compendium of the globe's beer styles, ranging from Abbey Ale to Zwickel. With special features including a roundup of "beer culture" (such as beer songs and movies about beer), notes on touring breweries, and a selection of beer-cocktail recipes and food dishes you can make with beer, Drinkology Beer is a beer book completely unlike any other. Praise for Drinkology Beer:"If you need a little beer brush-up, or know someone who does, Drinkology Beer is one of the most fun educational beverage reads we've had in years."-LA Weekly "The budding beer aficionado in your life will smile when you hand him a gift-wrapped copy of James Waller's Drinkology Beer: A Book About the Brew." -Richmond Times-Dispatch "I've been writing about beer for twenty years, so I know a bit about the subject, yet I learn something new every time I open this book. James Waller set out to write for the absolute novice and, in doing so, he reminds us experts that we can all stand to brush up on the basics." -John Foyston, MIX magazine "You almost never get a writer as entertaining as Waller, who is so gifted that he could probably make a textbook on plumbing a scintillating read." -Austin Chronicle

Ranging from the simple to the sumptuous, here are over 200 recipes for modern Americans inspired by dishes and beverages the authors discovered in cookbooks, family journals, and notebooks of 150 to 250 years ago. Did you know that breakfast in the eighteenth century was typically a mug of beer and some mush and molasses, invariably taken on the run? That settlers enjoyed highly spiced foods and the taste of slightly spoiled meat? Or that, at first, Colonists didn't understand how to make tea and instead stewed the tea leaves in butter, threw out what liquid collected, and munched on the leaves? These peculiar facts precede tried and tested recipes, some of which include: Cold grapefruit soup Tweedy family steak and kidney pie Madras artichokes Sour rabbit and potato dumplings Apple-shrimp curry Pumpkin chiffon pie Lemon flummery And much more Each chapter of recipes is introduced with accounts of how early Americans breakfasted, dined, drank, and entertained. The illustrations of utensils, tankards, porringers, and pots used in the early days are drawn from actual objects in major private and public collections of early Americana and make Colonial Cooking a great resource for American history enthusiasts.

On a spring morning in 1903, Major-General Sir Hector Macdonald, one of Britain's greatest military heroes, took his life in a hotel room in Paris. A few days later he was buried hastily in an Edinburgh cemetary as his fellow countrymen tried to come to terms with the fact that one of Scotland's most famous soldiers had ended his life rather than face charges against his character. The suicide and its aftermath created a national scandal and one which still reverberates long after those dramatic events - it is now clear that the official files dealing with his case, the papers of the Judge Advocate have been destroyed. Macdonald or 'Fighting Mac' as he was known to an adoring public, was no ordinary soldier. A crofter's son who had risen from the ranks in the Victorian army, he covered himself with glory during a long and successful military career and in 1898 was widely acknowledged as the true hero of the Battle of Omdurman, which cemented British Imperial rule in Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. Everything lay at his feet - a knighthood, honours, the respect of fellow generals such as Roberts and Kitchener - but Macdonald's career came to a shocking full stop when he stood accused of homosexuality and was ordered to face a court martial. Unable to come to terms with the disgrace, he committed suicide. That should have been the end of his story but so powerful was the myth created by Fighting Mac that people refused to believe he was dead. Soon rumours were circulating that Macdonald had faked his death and had adopted the persona of a prominent Prussian officer, the future Field Marshal August con Mackensen, one of Germany's great leaders during the First World War. FIGHTING MAC tells the true story behind his disgrace and sheds new light on the myths.

Troy and Carter had a plan. Go to a club. Find a beautiful girl to become their Queen. Seduce her and have her begging for more, so she never wanted to leave. That was great in theory, but finding the perfect girl, was not that easy, until they saw Sam. She had long blonde hair, double D breasts and recently single. She was perfect, but if she was to be their queen, she had to take the two of them together. Sam had never had two men at once, will their demands be too hot to handleA sneak peak inside: Carter got up moved moved closer to her. "There's only one rule, Samantha. No touching. This is simply a rule that you don't break."Samantha turned to Troy and he was snickering, a gleam in his eyes. "Kneel on the bed Samantha." Troy said. Samantha kneeled and nervously waited there. Carter looked at Troy. "Rock…paper…scissors for choice?" Carter asked. Samantha's jaw dropped. Was he serious? They were going to play a game to decide who got front and who got back? Sure enough the two men played the game and Troy was the winner. He seemed all too eager to make his choice. "Carter, my man, you've had your share facing her. It's my turn.

The island nation of Vanuatu lies in the South Pacific Ocean about one-thousand miles east and a little north of Australia. Nestled in this anonymous land is the tiny island of Torba which boasts a five-star resort, excellent surfing on the windward side, a beautiful coral lagoon with world-class snorkeling on the leeward, a small mountain off of which one can hang-glide and land on soft sand beaches, a casino, golf, tennis and anything else the well-heeled might want in a private get-away. Including me. The island is run by The Company. Led by Mistress Melissa our little enclave caters to the dark and sometimes bizarre fantasies of the very rich. The clientele are exclusive and well vetted as are their desires. But even within the confines of Company rules their imaginations can be amazingly creative - and amazingly harsh.I had been sentenced to this tropical paradise/playground, destined to serve. Along with my companions and friends I could find myself as a helpless and terrified cheerleader writhing under a lash in the morning and then having ice-cream and going lingerie shopping in the afternoon. And when the morning light came shining in we'd get up and do it again. But it was never routine. I once became the Queen of all the Amazons - but only after going through two days of absolute hell. I met a wonderful woman on that island and we became lovers, but then I had to take part in her torment - and she got to witness my own. And the weirdest part was that if I was ever to get out of that crazy, crazy world I had to go through it. It was my sentence. But I didn't know how long that sentence would be. None of us did. And I am not making this up.

Sorry. I wasn't thinking."Hmm. Maybe I'd better take care of you just in case," June told her. "You seem to have an extraordinarily high sex drive and I wouldn't want you making a mistake at this critical point in your development."Sometimes Nadia was flat-out completely confused by what June and Prof. Pitor said. "Well, I do have a high libido," she admitted, "but what will having sex with you do to solve that?"Never mind. Just take down your pants and let me take care of the problem." She waved her hand in front of Nadia's face. "It's a simple enough request, dear.

Desperate and in debt, Mary Ellen thought her Billionaire Boss would not miss any of the money she was going to borrow from the safe. He had so much cash; she could repay it before he found out. Two days later she was called into his office, she had been caught, and he was only interested in her repaying the debt in one way. She would become his submissive and punishing her was at the top of his list.A sneak peak inside: He threw the phone down and wrapped his arm around my waist. His lips went to mine and he kissed me hard. It was so hard that it knocked the wind out of me, but I held on. His tongue dove into my mouth, claiming me and I got lost in the moment. My arms wrapped around him and I started to grope at his backside, but then it suddenly stopped and he pushed me down on the bed."Umph…" I groaned, staring up at him."I have one rule. You only do as I say and if you suddenly find yourself forgetting that rule…I will see to it that I change my mind. Understand?" I stared at him, unable to speak, but nodding my head in understanding. I wasn't about to let him down.I was sprawled on the bed, naked and trembling. He grabbed the two ropes and tied my wrists to the bedposts. I never felt so vulnerable in my life. He pulled back, after tying the last knot and stared at me, like I was a piece of meat he was about to cook."Here's how it works, Mary Ellen." He turned from me. Slowly I watched him undress, piece by piece, his clothes fell to the floor. His ass came into view and I groaned, amazed by how turned on I was becoming.

GOD, FIRE AND TRUTH "A POETIC JOURNEY THROUGH THE BIBLE " This is a book about the bible written all in poetry. Each and every book of the Bible is in this book with a few of my own poems not based upon the book that I read to get the major poems about the most important parts of the Bible. If you like the Psalms but find the other parts of the Bible a bit confusing, then this is a book that will help you understand the Bible better. We have a loving, but just God. You wouldn't let your child run wild in the traffic of the streets would you? Well God sets down rules so that we can be safe and get through this sometimes hard world. He does it because He loves us! I hope this book will give you hours of enjoyment. I know I learned a lot from writing it that I did not know from reading the actual Bible. Nothing can surpass the actual Bible, but for some, you may find this book to be rather fun. The poems were written from reading a small book about the most important parts of each book of the Bible. God bless you, Diann Ross Woodbury

Esther Rabach's story begins in a Jewish shtetl (a small village) within the Pale of Settlement, an isolated area designated by Catherine the Great during her anti-Semitic rule of Russia. Esther, young and naïve with a head full of romantic dreams, embarks on a journey to America to marry the man she loves. Arriving in New York City in 1910, she discovers a world of ferment, chaos, and inequality known as the Sweatshop Era, where immigrants are exploited and abused. Experiencing these injustices first hand, Esther becomes a dedicated activist in the fight for an equitable America. Louise Cabral, in her skillful writing, has accomplished a portrait of a woman's transformation from innocence to true heroism. The World Beyond the Pale will take the reader on a voyage between the devastation of the Old World and the hope for the New World. "Louise Cabral writes with the impassioned insight of a wise, true elder-a quality age alone can't guarantee. She writes with a courageous heart-willing to be broken open for the sake of being filled. My heart and mind have been enriched by virtue of her literary gifts." -Wayne Allen LeVine, author of Insights of an Ordinary Man "The World Beyond the Pale is an inspiring and uplifting story with a powerful female protagonist. I love Esther. All of the characters come to life through a realism that nothing is certain, all things change, and overcoming the obstacles is the triumph." -Aurora Terrenus, author of The Shroud of Sophia "The World Beyond the Pale captures your heart while it effortlessly feeds you historical bite after juicy historical bite. Through her compassionate words, Louise Cabral pays homage to the Jewish culture and brings life to a story that gives a voice to many who were silenced too soon." -Valerie Kruley, editor

This book presents a vivid description of the solutions that researchers have discovered for ethical dilemmas that pose themselves at studying disadvantaged, vulnerable and victimized populations. Ethical codes prescribe that the scholar should in all circumstances avoid potential harm, that informed consent is necessary and that the limits of confidentiality should always be respected. However, in the practice of research among women involved in prostitution, illegal immigrant workers, enslaved children, people who sell their organs and all the traffickers thereof, the ethical rules cannot always be followed. This book shows that there is a surprising variety of arguable possibilities in dealing with ethical dilemmas in the field. Authors reflect on concrete experiences from their own fieldwork in a wide variety of settings such as the USA, Singapore, Kosovo and The Netherlands. Some choose to work on the basis of conscientious partiality, others negotiate the rules with their informants and still others purposely break the rules in order to disclose and damage the exploiters. Researchers may find themselves in a vulnerable position. Their experiences, as presented in this volume, will help field workers, university administrators, representatives of vulnerable groups, philosophers of ethics and most of all students to go into the field well-prepared. This is a book that every researcher planning to do fieldwork in the difficult field of hidden, illicit and victimized people should read in advance. Dr. Frank Bovenkerk, Professor (Emeritus), Willem Pompe Institute for Criminal Law and Criminology, Universiteit Utrecht, The NetherlandsThis book allows a peek in the kitchen of empirical fieldwork, going into not only "best practices," but mistakes made, in a frank, courageous and honest way.
